Twisting the Kaleidoscope

She had reminded that we could choose us to twist our kaleidoscope so that new, brighter colors could be part of our point of view.

So much boils down to our interpretations of the world.

While I was hiking with my mom recently, the noise of a helicopter started overpowering our conversation. As we looked up, both of us realized that this helicopter wasn’t just nearby, it was almost hovering over us along the trail.

Suddenly, we felt out of place.

“Are we not supposed to be here?” my mom asked. I had not been concerned initially, but the question made me uncertain. “I don’t see why we can’t be here...but do you want to leave?” I offered.

Seconds later, our thoughts were interrupted by an energized middle-aged woman plowing past us on her run. Tilting her head towards the helicopter and then looking in our direction, she exclaimed, “So cool! I wish I could show my kids!”

My mom and I looked at each other dumbfounded as we processed her reaction. And then we started laughing.

What a way to see the world.

She would never know how stark the contrast had been between her interpretation of the helicopter and ours, and we had needed this reminder.

By just sharing her good-natured perspective, she had shifted our mindset. She had reminded us that there is always another way to look at a situation. She had reminded us that not only were we allowed to be there, but we were lucky to be there. She had reminded us that we could choose to twist our kaleidoscope so that new, brighter colors could be part of our point of view.

And with that little twist…

Everything looked different as we continued on the hiking trail that now felt more right than ever.
